Harbour Grace, NL

This was a fairly cold, windy day when we travelled up to Harbour Grace. I really enjoyed that community. It was quite sleepy but when word got round that the capelin were rolling it seemed like the whole town came out with their buckets. I needed this explained to me as a landlubber. These little fish come in to the shore and essentially beach themselves. It makes for some easy supper! People head out with their buckets and just scoop them up. It also attracts whales and sea life so thats an added bonus. You could always tell where the "capelin were rolling" because there would me a million seagulls and suddenly 40 cars parked on the side of the road! You can see what I mean here.

  4. what a beautiful place! and i saw the video; its very amusing to see such sight but at the same time i felt little sad for the fishes and it felt like sea was pushing them out on the beach.

    1. It is a little sad isn't it! That is actually how they spawn and the males (the ones beaching) pretty much all end up sacrificing themselves for the next generation. Pretty depressing though!
